Film by Cameron University professor Matt Jenkins finds success at film festivals

“Little Rose,” a feature length film produced by Cameron University faculty member Matt Jenkins, has been garnering attention on the film festival circuit. Last week, the film was screened at the Gulf Coast Film and Video Festival, where it was won the competition in the Best Romance category. It is also an official selection at the 2018 Eyecatcher International Film Festival.

Cameron University to present Disability Awareness Fair

Cameron University will present the 11th Annual Disability Awareness Fair on Thursday, October 4, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom, located in the McMahon Centennial Complex on the Cameron campus. The event is open to the public at no charge. The Disability Awareness fair will inform participants about services and resources available on campus and in the community for persons with disabilities.

Cameron University to offer career showcase for social sciences fields

The Cameron University Department of Social Sciences will present a career showcase focusing on forensic, criminal justice and nursing careers on Thursday, October 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Aggie Rec Center. The event is sponsored by the CU Criminal Justice Association and the Department of Social Sciences research team.

Cameron University theatre season starts with contemporary tragedy, “4.48 Psychosis”

Cameron University’s Department of Art, Music, and Theatre Arts will open its 2018-2019 theatre season, celebrating “Where Everything Comes Together,” with British playwright Sarah Kane’s “4.48 Psychosis.” The contemporary tragedy will be presented in the University Theatre from September 27-30. The curtain goes up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for senior citizens, military, Cameron faculty and staff, and non-Cameron students. CU students receive one free admission with their CU I.D. “4.48 Psychosis” looks at mental illness and thoughts of suicide. On opening night a special panel discussion will be held after the show to discuss the production’s topic. Dr. Shaun Calix, Associate Professor in the CU Department of Psychology, will lead the discussion. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 580-581-2478.

Cameron University accounting student honored with national merit scholarship

Cameron University student Brett Burk has been honored with the Public Company Accountancy Oversight Board (PCAOB) Merit Scholarship, a significant monetary award that will be utilized to fund tuition, fees, books and supplies. He is one of 332 national recipients and is the only student at an Oklahoma regional university to be selected for the honor. Burk’s selection was based on his demonstrated interest and aptitude in accounting and auditing as well as his adherence to the highest ethical standards.

Cameron University’s annual Constitution Day observance to focus on “Your Federal Courts: I-Civics, E-Searches and the role of United States Magistrate Judges”

Cameron University will join colleges and universities across the nation to celebrate Constitution Day on Monday, September 17, with “Your Federal Courts: I-Civics, E-Searches and the role of United States Magistrate Judges,” a presentation by Judge Shon T. Erwin, Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma. Erwin will discuss the role of U.S. Magistrate Judges in the federal courts with emphasis on magistrate judge jurisdiction and duties. He will put particular emphasis on preliminary criminal matters such as preliminary hearings, bail hearings, search warrants, and orders for electronically stored information. Constitution Day is a national observance which recognizes the adoption of the United States Constitution and the creation of United States citizens in 1787. The event takes place in the CETES Conference Center at 2 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge. Refreshments will be served.

Middle school mathletes encouraged to attend Cameron University’s It’s MathE, a free mathematics and engineering enrichment program

Calling all middle school mathletes! Registration is now open for Cameron University’s It’s MathE, a fun and exciting mathematics and engineering enrichment program aimed at students in grade six through eight. The event takes place on Saturday, September 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is free and is limited to 50 participants. Attendees are advised to dress for outdoor activities. Cameron University students and alumni, as well as community members from throughout southwest Oklahoma, are invited to attend the CU Opportunity Fair, scheduled for Wednesday, September 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. The event will provide attendees with opportunities to meet and interview with local companies that are seeking quality applicants for part-time jobs, internships and/or volunteer positions. No registration is required. The CU Opportunity Fair will take place in the McCasland Ballroom of the McMahon Centennial Complex. Cameron University partners with Southwestern Medical Center to provide medical services at CU Student Wellness Center

Cameron University students seeking medical care at the CU Student Wellness Center are now being treated by licensed professionals from Southwestern Medical Center (SWMC), thanks to a partnership between CU and SWMC. Quality health care for the Student Wellness Center is provided by SWMC physician assistants and nurse practitioners under the supervision of a physician.

Cameron University’s Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts is pleased to announce its 2018-2019 season, “Where Everything Comes Together.” The eclectic season features an avant-garde tragedy, a contemporary comedy of manners, a classic farce, and a family friendly musical comedy. Season tickets are available for $35 for adults and $30 for senior citizens, military, non-Cameron students and Cameron faculty/staff. To purchase season tickets, call (580) 581-2346. Cameron University students are admitted to theatre productions at no charge with Cameron ID.

Cameron University to host claims processors from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Cameron University’s Office of Veterans Affairs will host claims processors from the Muskogee VA Regional Processing Office on Tuesday, September 4. The event marks the first time that claims processors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will be on the Cameron campus to assist veterans, active service members and their dependents. Chelsea Jackson, Veterans Claims Examiner, and Jeremy Kerns, Senior Veterans Claims Examiner, will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 332 of North Shepler to answer questions about all chapters of GI Bill® benefits, payment questions, and debt questions. They will be able to check on individual VA educational claims benefit status and can answer specific questions about educational benefit eligibility, check amounts and more. Cameron University becomes first university in Oklahoma to participate in the VetSuccess on Campus program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

With the addition of Alfred Finch to the Office of Veteran Affairs, Cameron University is the first institution of higher learning in Oklahoma to join the VetSuccess on Campus (VSOC) program. VSOC, an initiative of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), supports veterans, service members, and eligible dependents in their transition from military to college life by providing counselors to approved institutions of higher learning. Finch, an employee of the DVA’s VSOC staff, will serves as CU’s VSOC counselor and can be reached by calling CU’s Office of Veteran Affairs at 580-581-2301 or via email at alfinch@cameron.edu. His office is located on the third floor of North Shepler.

Area businesses seeking part-time workers, interns and volunteers invited to register for CU Opportunity Fair

Area businesses are invited to participate in Cameron University’s upcoming Opportunity Fair. The event provides CU students and alumni as well as community members with opportunities to meet and interview with local companies which seek quality applicants for part-time jobs, internships, and/or volunteer positions. Vendor registration is free; however, limited space is available. For online registration information, call CU’s Department of Career Services at 580-581-2209. The deadline to register is Friday, September 7, at 5 p.m.

Cameron University presents Fifth Annual French Film Festival

Cameron University’s annual French Film Festival returns for the fifth year with three contemporary French language films from August 23-25. Free screenings of “Indochine,”, “Le Petit Nicholas” and “Ne le dis a personne” will take place in the Cameron University Theatre. Films are shown in French with English subtitles. The festival will extend throughout the Lawton/Fort Sill community with special events held in conjunction with the films. Bella Voce to be featured in recital benefitting Cameron University vocal program

The Cameron University Department of Art, Music and Theatre Arts will host “A Woman’s Voice,” a free concert by Bella Voce, Lawton/Fort Sill’s all-women’s chorus, on Monday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. Admission is free, although donations are suggested. Proceeds will benefit the Cameron University vocal program. Seating is limited to the first 80 patrons. Cameron University releases “Plan 2023: Ambitious Goals for Growth, Innovation and Engagement”

Cameron University has released “Plan 2023: Ambitious Goals for Growth, Innovation and Engagement,” a long-term strategic plan designed to guide Cameron University’s growth, development and the allocation of its resources for five years beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year. The planning document was approved by the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents earlier today during its regularly scheduled meeting.

Cameron University initiatives planned and budget approved for 2018-2019

Cameron University’s governing board reviewed major university initiatives for the upcoming year and approved an annual budget of just over $46 million for Fiscal Year 2019 during its regularly scheduled meeting today in Oklahoma City. The University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents approved a $46,191,037 operating budget with approximately $35 million earmarked for student instruction, academic support, student scholarships and tuition waivers, and student services during the upcoming academic year.

Dr. Jennifer Dennis named Dean of Cameron University School of Graduate and Professional Studies

Jennifer Dennis, Ph.D., has been selected as Cameron University’s Dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies. The University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents approved Dennis’ appointment earlier today during its regularly scheduled meeting. Dennis will assume her role as dean effective July 1.

Cameron announces Spring 2018 honor rolls

Cameron University has announced the President’s and Dean’s honor rolls for the Spring 2018 semester. To make the President’s Honor Roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours of classes) and maintain a straight A average (4.0). The Dean’s Honor Roll requires a B average (3.00-3.99).

Cameron University Foundation establishes endowed scholarship in memory of alumnus, staff member Patrick Copeland

The Cameron University Foundation has established an endowed scholarship thanks to the family and friends of the late Patrick Copeland, a CU alumnus and staff member. The Patrick Copeland Memorial Endowed Scholarship in English and Foreign Languages will benefit full-time students who are pursuing a degree in the English & Foreign Languages discipline with preference given to students who have declared a major in International Languages.

Cameron University faculty members Eric Abbott, Irene Corriette, Robert McDaniel, Dr. Ann Nalley, Dr. Elisabeth Ponce-Garcia and Dr. Joanni Sailor have been honored with awards recognizing their contributions to Cameron’s academic community. Abbott was honored with the Hackler Award for Teaching Excellence, Corriette received the Faculty Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching, Nalley received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Student Research, McDaniel received the Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching, Ponce-Garcia received the Bhattacharya Endowed Lectureship for Excellence in Research Award, and Sailor was honored with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Service.

Cameron University Department of Social Sciences publishes third volume of CHiPS, an undergraduate research journal

The Cameron University Department of Social Sciences has released the third volume of CHiPS: The Cameron University Undergraduate Research Journal of History and Political Science. The volume features the research of Cameron undergraduates Sandi Colby, Christopher Ellwanger and Luis Jaquez. CHiPS, which features student research papers in the fields of criminal justice, history, political science, sociology and geography, can be viewed online at www.cameron.edu/history_government/chips. Printed copies are available in the Department of Social Sciences.
